I'm sure we've all noticed that Walthamstow Central has a fraction of its previous number of books after its £3.5 million refurbishment. Also, its reference section has been closed almost every time I've been there, because there weren't enough staff to open it. Now it's been reopened, but I was told it will stay unstaffed. That's useless. Reference libraries are quite complex and you need people who know how to help you find what you're looking for.

But I suppose as they're weeding out all the trained staff, and dumping any useful book, it won't make much difference!

Incidentally, Walthamstow Central library has just reopened (10 July) after two and a half weeks closed because of a fire. Computer system still not working. Council seems to be saying the only damage was a bit of smoke, but someone working there said electrics were damaged, including computer leads. Is the council giving us the whole story?

Getting 29 responses seem quite a poor job done. The council has to learn the technique of consultation from the St James Library campaign team. Perhaps employ them as consultants who live within the borough instead of hiring outsiders who know nothing about what WF really needs! This will cut down the overspending and rubbish information collected or given.

Hi
Really find the Loakes & co adventureland just amazing! Reminds me of Disneyland but with a different atmosphere - very depressing!
Before long, Walthamstow will be a "Depressing Disneyland!"

Time we have a change of political power to bring back the fun in Walthamstow - a place of historical and cultural interest!

The council delayed the meeting due for Feb 21st. They were given 6 months to come back with a solution. But they still have not got their acts together. That is why they need more time for ..... what? Is this their delaying tactics?

Reader, he council probably does hate books -- they've got rid of nearly a quarter of a million, some of them to Edmonton incinerator by all accounts! And every time they close a library for refurbishment it reopens with about a quarter as many books.
They're not doing this to save money, because they already own the books, and the ones they get rid of are not not sold. And they don't even do free things for readers, like Year of Reading.
But we only have to put up with them till the next elections.

My friend told me about the open air library and I was excited because I thought St James Street library was opening again. I was disappointed when she said it was only Saturday afternoon. But that's much better than nothing. Thanks for bringing the books. I enjoyed it and I will come back next time. I wish we could have the real library back. Please read this, councillors!

But why aren't the libraries doing anything for the Year of Reading? Why isn't the council backing this? It's a nation-wide event, as you said, http://www.yearofreading.org.uk. It doesn't cost anything.

Do they just hate books? Or are they embarrssed because, since they started closing libraries and dumping books, kids in Waltham Forest aren't doing so well in reading?
