This campaign was started by local people in response to Waltham Forest Council’s closure of St James’ Street Library at the end of March this year. Not only were local residents not consulted in advance, but they were not even told the library was closing.  St James’s Street Library was built at the top of Coppermill Lane over 40 years ago. Its position at the bottom of the market was ideal for local users. Including schools and nurseries, whether it was to borrow books, read newspapers, develop IT skills or do homework in a safe place.  The local community feels deeply about this closure. Many residents feel angry and disenfranchised: so far our petition has nearly 2,000 signatures (July 07).  This closure is short-sighted and the reasons given inadequate.
